FTW373 Warm Storage Hangar

FTW373 Warm Storage Hangar

Schneider Structural Engineers fast-tracked the design of a 56,200-square foot warm storage hanger for the storage and maintenance of Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk medium lift utility helicopters, owned and operated by the U.S. Army. Situated in Fort Wainwright, Alaska (named after WWII general Jonathan Wainwright) the hangar provides shelter and storage for the sophisticated UH-60 airframe, and contributes significantly in maintaining readiness for Fort Wainwright’s mission: “to serve as the Joint Force Land Component Command in support of Joint Task Force Alaska.”

The hangar’s steel framed structure is comprised of long-span steel bowstring girder trusses spanning 212 ft., which form the “barrel roof” profile of the structure.  The roof structure is elevated 30 ft. above the hangar floor and is braced with steel Special Concentric Braced Frames supported by reinforced concrete foundations.  The main hangar doors consist of six (6) 30 ft. wide by 29 ft. tall, sections that are mounted on rollers, supported by steel rails embedded in the foundation. The door sections can be fully retracted into pockets on each side of the door opening creating a 160 ft. wide by 29 ft. tall opening, providing access the column free interior with capacity for the storage and maintenance of seven (7) UH-60 aircraft.

To meet the construction schedule and take advantage of the short summer construction season in interior Alaska, Schneider worked diligently with the Design/Build contractor and the design team to Fast-Track both the Footing & Foundation Design and a Structural Steel Design packages, submitting them months before the A/M/E/FP Design packages. Schneider has extensive experience with Fast-Track structural designs which can greatly aid with project success when dealing with the short summer construction seasons in Alaska.
