Wilson Produce

Understanding the need for sustainable, environmental-friendly energy, Wilson Produce hired Schneider Structural to design and facilitate construction of a roof-mounted solar energy system. The existing circa 1960 roof utilized precast and prestressed double tees. Schneider’s design had to be flexible enough to install into a relatively thin (4” wide) and relatively shallow (10” deep) tee stem to be viable. The internal modeling of the proposed threaded rod supports showed a substantial conservatism in that the calculated design utilization exceeded 300% for the rods. Schneider custom designed a program to test vertically installed threaded rods to the expected design loads that would enable the contractor to install threaded rod supports at 8’0” spacing for what normally would have required a more substantial racking system. The testing made possible a substantial increase in support loads so that the threaded rods became a viable solution. The structural design team found threaded rods were an acceptable vertical support for lower profile solar racking.
