Registered civil engineer in Alaska and Colorado

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering

Daniel Folmar was born and raised in Alabama, and has been migrating north and west ever since. Daniel moved from Colorado to Alaska in 2005 to join the Anchorage office of Schneider Structural Engineers. He was promoted to Associate in 2008.

Daniel enjoys the unique challenges of the northern design environment. He excels in providing safe, efficient and creative solutions to meet the environmental and logistical challenges of building in Alaska.

Over the past eight years, Daniel has engineered new structures throughout the continental U.S. and Alaska, as well as performed investigation and provided retrofit design services for existing structures. He has a reputation for working effectively with architects, contractors and other design team members.

Daniel’s latest engineering achievement is the renovation of the historic 1940s Alaska Railroad freight shed in downtown Anchorage, converting the heavy timber building into industrial loft-style offices that meet today’s seismic and snow loading requirements while maintaining the historic authenticity of the original structure. This is the first historic building project in Alaska to go “green” and be LEED® certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Daniel is currently engineering the F-22 Squad Ops and 6-Bay Hangar facility at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, which combines a three-story 44,000-square-foot office/support building with a six-bay 34,000-square-foot aircraft hangar. When completed in 2010, this will be the first military facility in Alaska to utilize cutting-edge buckling-restrained braced-framed technology for the seismic load-resisting system.

He is a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Alaska, the American Institute of Steel Construction and the International Code Council.

Outside of the office, Daniel is an avid bicyclist, and enjoys training and racing in all weather conditions, in summer and winter months.

“Yes you really can ride a bicycle in Alaska in the winter!”
